First published on Sat, April 30, 2011.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport invited Darren Henley, the managing director of Classic FM, to conduct a review into cultural education. The review follows on from another review conducted by Mr Henley, entitled ‘Music Education in England’. The recommendations from the report may go onto forming a national strategy for cultural education

The consultation period opened on the 8th of April 2011, and closed on the 20th May 2011. The report is expected to be published before the end of 2011.

Creative & Cultural Skills were invited to give evidence in person to Darren Henley, and followed the meeting up with written evidence, which highlighted the need to:

  • Ensure that cultural education covers both the creative side of the education system, along with the need to train people to work within the creative and cultural industries
  • the specific types of education that are needed for all people in order to suceed in the creative and cultural industries
  • the need for there to be clear progression routes throughout all types of cultural education, including routes through further education, higher education and apprenticeships.
